28th November 2016 – Raffles brings industry expertise to the classroom with another Creative Talk. Speakers are Ziggy V. Bautista and Cynthia Chan, directors of renowned interior design agency M Moser Associates.

M Moser Associates is an interior design company that specializes in creating effective workplace environments for global businesses. They have multiple offices spread all over the world (U.S., Europe and Asia) and employ more than 750 professional designers. Among these 750 designers are Raffles alumni and current students doing their internship. M Moser Associates’ directors Ziggy V. Bautista and Cynthia Chan made time in their busy schedule to come and share their knowledge and experience with our Raffles designers.

Speaker Ziggy V. Bautista

Ziggy V. Bautista has been working as an interior designer since 1994 and is responsible for the overall design of projects and managing and directing the M Moser design team. Ziggy talked about inspiration: how did the greatest architects and designers come up with their work? How did they get their ideas?  Ziggy went deeper on these questions as also to the problem that every designer will face during his/her career: having no inspiration. Ziggy handed the students practical solutions on  how to deal with this issue and how to make sure to keep the creative juices flowing. Some of the solutions that worked for him are traveling, reading book or listening to audio books, exercising, writing down your dreams and –surprisingly- not drinking too much coffee.

Speaker: Cynthia Chan

Cynthia Chan has more than 20 years of experience in the real estate, design and construction sectors.  In her talk Cynthia discussed the difference between school and working life: what do you need to be prepared for when you enter the work force?  Using her own personal experiences as examples, Cynthia stressed the importance of active listening and negotiation. Active listening means truly listening to your client’s needs and desires. Without understanding what your client is looking for, you will not be able to create a design that the client is satisfied with. Good negotiation skills are also a must for being a successful designer. Clients might have thousands of requirements and you might not be able to meet all of them. The key is to negotiate and let them see which requirements are more important and where you can bring value.

Raffles Creative Talks bring the industry to the classroom and allow students to learn firsthand about the latest industry developments and trends in their chosen discipline. This knowledge together with the skills acquired in school, prepare them for their entrance into the workforce and the start of their professional design career.
